PACIFIC OCEAN (October 23, 2010) - Machinists Mate 2nd Class Dennis Thomas (right) from Macon, Ms. uses irritant smoke to test the seal of an air-purifying respirator worn by Culinary Specialist Seaman Shane McCann from Salt Lake City, Utah on board USS George Washington (CVN 73). Respirators are worn by Sailors on George Washington for activities such as priming, painting and sanding to protect their respiratory systems from harmful dust and vapors. George Washington, the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier is currently underway helping to ensure security and stability in the western Pacific Ocean.
